What’s new in NYC?

There’s something about planting roots in New York City that inspires and challenges us on the FCA NYC Team. This past summer, we held our first ever Leadership Camp with the theme of STRONG at the New York School of Urban Ministry. Together, we experienced both the beauty and grit of busy city life by taking the trains and walking the streets with Bibles in our hands and FCA T-Shirts on our backs. Many of our youth and coaches shared their testimonies while riding the trains and it was fun to see the curious glances from people who overheard the Gospel message from our group. We also visited the World Trade Center and learned about the 12 Strong and the sacrifice that comes with leading others. We even heard our first public reading of Scripture, where the boys heard verses from Psalm 91, Ephesians 6, and 2 Timothy.

On Friday night, we attended a Mets game where Louis Batista hit a walk-off Grand Slam in the ninth inning with the Mets tied to win the game. The joy that we experienced at that moment was a testament of never giving up – no matter the odds stacked against you. In our final chapel service, the Chaplin of the NY Mets came and facilitated a conversation with our very own Mets pitcher, Steven Matz. He shared his love for Jesus and sports and what it’s like to be a Christian athlete on a professional sports team.

While all of those moments were powerful and life-giving, the most impactful moment came at the end of our program when our participants and coaches were ready to leave. A group of high school and college students came up to our team and asked how they could be part of the FCA Team, wanting to do for others what we had done for them during camp. This was an indicator that something deeper was beginning to take root in each of the boys’ lives, and our staff is committed to walking alongside these individuals throughout the process, step by step. We recognize that this will take time, but we are dedicated to focusing on those who are committed to serving the Lord within FCA NYC and are grateful that these young men have answered the call.

Stay tuned as we walk this journey out with the next generation of leaders and coaches that will grow with us by God’s grace.

Gratefully,
