JASON HAREWOOD
Long Island Area Representative
Jason Harewood has a proven track record of success in directing and coaching youth athletic teams and supporting the development of young adults. He and his wife, Althea, are residents of Baldwin, NY. As an active member of the Long Island sports community, he is diligent in providing youth with opportunities to build meaningful relationships with their peers and caring adults, and recognizes the advantages inherent in a sound sports program.
Harewood began his journey with FCA in 2009 when he accepted an invitation to volunteer as a girl’s basketball clinician at the Kutztown Sports Camp: “During my first year in college, I came to know Jesus Christ on a personal level through a similar Christian sports ministry, Athletes in Action. Therefore, I know firsthand the eternal impact a Christian-based ministry such as FCA can have on athletes and coaches.”
For many years, Harewood has coached Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) and Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball. Under the blessing and guidance of the Holy Spirit, many of his former players have received athletic scholarships to some of the most prestigious universities in the country. He served as Program Director and Girl’s Basketball Coach for Scholar Athletes of Long Island, as Deputy Executive Director and COO of the Hempstead Boys and Girls Club, and as a Long Island Community Outreach Director for the United States Tennis Association. He is Founder of the Greater Hempstead Serves Inc., a USTA-funded initiative.
Prior to his not-for-profit career, for thirteen years, Harewood worked at American Express as a Financial Systems Administrator and Project Leader with experience working abroad in Mexico, Argentina and Brazil on a three-year worldwide financial system implementation project. Harewood attended Cathedral Prep High School, where was one of the all-time top basketball player and a Hall of Fame member. He attended St. Francis College in Brooklyn, and completed an Executive Education program at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business.
As a result of his athletic experience and his personal relationship with Jesus Christ, Harewood is now focused on reaching coaches and athletes on all levels to use sports to impact their world for Jesus Christ through the ministry of FCA: “I am so excited to have the opportunity to continue my involvement in sports and serve God publicly at the same time.” One of his most treasured scripture verses is Proverbs 3:5-6.
