Ugonna Onyekwe

Manhattan Area Representative

To avid fans of basketball, Ugonna Onyekwe is a name many recognize. As a two-time Ivy League Player of the Year (2001-02 and 2002-03) and Ivy League Rookie of the Year (1999-00), he took the collegiate basketball world by storm with his dramatic dunks and versatile play. He led his Alma Mater, the University of Pennsylvania, to three Ivy League championships before pursuing a professional career overseas for eight years. Following his time in Spain and Israel, he contributed to NBA teams including the Bulls, Knicks, 76ers, and Nuggets in summer league and camp play.

Throughout his career, Onyekwe inspired the next generation with his powerful presence underneath the rim and three-point shot accuracy. He also invested in the lives of youth by serving as a team ambassador, being a team spokesperson, visiting schools and hospitals, coaching, and mentoring. After retiring from his basketball career, he put the business degree he earned at Penn’s Wharton School of Business to work, but he never let go of his willingness to reach out to the next generation. He now looks forward to reaching out to the city of New York through his staff position with Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

“I think that all of my previous experience up to this point has really prepared me for this. I came to New York City a couple of years ago with a real heart for the city. [FCA] is something that, for me, made sense and an area God opened the door for. I’m excited to jump in and see what God does!”

Onyekwe helps run Podini Media, a company he co-founded which focuses on the production and implementation of digital marketing projects. He looks forward to establishing a solid foundation and board of directors for FCA’s work to continue in NYC.

Life Scripture: If the God we serve exists, then He can rescue us from the furnace of blazing fire…. (– Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego’s response to their situation in Daniel 3:17a)
